<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display for calculating an approximation value of ALL by using a general-purpose video processing chip provided with a calculation function of ASL. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An approximation ALL calculation part 15 applies γ processing to a signal level, and calculates a value multiplying a correction coefficient corresponding to a rate of the number of colored pixels in a video frame to a value dividing the total of the signal levels subjected to γ processing by an entire pixel number i.e. ALL (Y)'. A backlight brightness control part 16 controls emission brightness of a backlight 17 based on ALL (Y)' calculated with the approximation ALL calculation part 15 and brightness graph (56).
