<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a speed reducer capable of suitably deflecting a worm shaft while restraining enlargement of a device in an axial direction of the worm shaft. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A backlash adjusting mechanism 20 has a holding part 25 fitted to a first bearing 18 supporting one end of the worm shaft 14 and holding the first bearing, and an energizing part 26 elastically deflected to a rotating direction while having a base end part 31a connected to a bottom wall of the holding part as a fulcrum, and adjusts backlash of a speed reduction mechanism 10 by deflecting the worm shaft to a worm wheel 15 side through the first bearing based on resilient force of the energizing part. A holder member 23 for holding the backlash adjusting mechanism 20 is arranged overlapping on the backlash adjusting mechanism in a radial direction, and is directly fixed to a housing by a bolt 37 so as to regulate relative rotation with respect to the housing 13.
