<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of cracks even in fritless sealing. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A high pressure discharge lamp includes: a discharge container made of ceramics and having a shell part 11 as a discharge space, small-diameter cylindrical parts 12a, 12b connecting to the shell part 11; conductors 23a, 23b structured in a shaft shape of metal material, which in turn are sealed by a sealing end part 13 molten and formed while inserted in the small-diameter cylindrical parts 12a, 12; an electrode 2A arranged in the discharge container 1 and arranged on tip ends of the conductors 23a, 23b extending to a part of the small-diameter cylindrical parts 12a, 12b; and a discharge medium sealed in the discharge container 1. At a boundary part of the sealing end part 13 and the conductors 23a, 23b, a metal composition of at least either of them or an oxide of it is diffused to the other one.
