PURPOSE: A remote controller and a method for operating the same are provided to perform volume adjustment, channel conversion and menu selection according to a direction of the remote controller. CONSTITUTION: A plurality of function keys(200) controls a function of an electronic device. A direction detection sensor(210) senses a direction of a remote controller. The direction detection sensor outputs a sensing signal according to the direction. A controller(220) receives the sensing signal by manipulating one of the function keys. The controller outputs a control signal for controlling a function of the electronic device based on the inputted sensing signal. The function key is a volume key(200a), a channel key(200b) or a menu selecting key(200c).
