PURPOSE: A mobile terminal for providing a user interface for a message service and a method thereof are provided to set a receiving side phone number and an icon on a screen to transmit a message, thereby applying a specific number service according to selection of the icon. CONSTITUTION: A display unit(140) displays an input window of at least one receiving side phone number to transmit a message. The display unit displays an icon for a special number service corresponding to the input window. A controller(130) inserts a special character corresponding to a corresponding number service into the front and the back of the receiving side phone number according to selection of the icon. The controller transmits a message including the receiving side phone number into which the special character is inserted.
