<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required for reading an original while detecting stains between an original reading means and an original reading position. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When an original reading operation by the image reader 10 of the image forming apparatus is ended, a dust detection reference member 40 disposed at the upper part of contact glass 11 is read through a traveling body 31. Dust between the traveling body 31 and the dust detection reference member 40 is detected, on the basis of the read image; and when there is dust, that effect is reported. When there is no dust, the traveling body 31 is moved, a white reference member 41 is read, and shading correction is executed; on the basis of the read image. Thus, dust detection processing, or the like, is finished before the next original is set, and standing by in the preparation for reading a new original is performed.
