[Also in Divisions A5 and B8] A portable container such as a bottle, made from two body parts each of thermoplastic resin welded together, has at least one of the body parts formed from foamed thermoplastic resin and having an integral, non-foamed skin, a part of which lies in the welded area. The two body parts are united by spin welding, which may comprise relative rotary motion or relative reciprocatory motion between the two parts. As shown, a top body part 200 is telescoped within a stationary bottom part 202 and either spun or oscillated to fuse the parts at 216. Alternatively, the bottom part 202 may be moved while the top half is stationary. Each body part 200, 202 has a foamed plastics core 206, 212 with integral non-porous inner and outer skins 204, 208, &c. In one modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the inner skins 208, &c., are omitted. In another form, Fig. 3 (not shown), the outer skin (238) of one body part is welded directly to another body part (232) of foamed plastics not having a skin either inside or outside. The containers formed may be of circular, rectangular, &c. cross-section. Suitable thermoplastic resins are listed.
