<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set ignition timing appropriate for an operation state, by determining only abnormality of an EGR device even in an internal combustion engine in which an EGR area is widely set. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A difference between an ignition timing delay quantity θG1 detected in a period for forcibly stopping the exhaust recirculation by the EGR device 44 and an ignition timing delay quantity θG2 detected in an operation period of the EGR device 44, is calculated as a difference ΔθG in an ignition timing delay quantity caused by the abnormality of the EGR device 44. The difference ΔθG is subtracted from a knock learning value θGKNOCK calculated in the operation period of the EGR device 44, and is set as a new knock learning value θGKNOCK, and the ignition timing is set by adding the ignition timing delay quantity caused by the fact except for the abnormality of the EGR device 44 such as deposition of a deposit.
