<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide adenosine antagonists, concerning medicinal chemistry and pharmacology. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The invention is based on the finding that compounds of formulae I and II are potential and selective inhibitors of specific subtypes of adenosine receptors. Based on the finding, the invention provides adenosine antagonists which are useful for the prevention and/or treatment of various diseases including disorders of the hearts and circulatory organs, degenerative disorders of the central nervous system, respiratory problems and a number of disorders for which treatments with diuretic drugs are suitable. The compounds of formulae I and II are disclosed as antagonists of A1 subtype adenosine receptors. The compounds are useful for the treatments of various kinds of diseases and disorders including systemic hypertension, renal failure, diabetes, asthma, an edematous condition, congestive heart failure, and renal dysfunction.
