[Also in Division F2] Apparatus for partially enclosing articles in wrapper blanks, includes a conveyer feed, a member, whose operative end describes a closed curve, for pushing the articles from the conveyer between folding members displaceable along the line of feed on the conveyer, and rotatable folding and welding jaws. The articles 1 are fed on to a reciprocating support 4 by conveyer flights 3, the support extending to bridge the gap between the conveyer and the folding members 10. The operative end 6a of a push member 6, pivotally journalled to a crank 7 and a lever 8, describes a closed path 9 with each rotation of the crank. The member 6 forces an article between the members 10, which fold a blank 14 around three sides of the article. The edges 13a of a pair of rotary folders 13 engage the blank and fold it round the trailing faces of the article, forming, in one embodiment, two superimposed flaps (14a), Fig. 2 (not shown), which are welded together by heated faces of the jaws, to form a projecting fin seal. Simultaneously the plates 10 are withdrawn, along guides 11, from the conveyer, conveying the partially wrapped article to a station for completion of wrapping (not detailed). In an alternative embodiment of the jaws (13), Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the lower jaw has a projecting portion (13c) which folds down and secures the fin seal. In a further alternative embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the lower jaw serves only to fold the lower flap up, the upper jaw then folding the upper flap down and welding it to form an overlap seam. The delayed movement of the upper jaw is achieved by varying its rotational speed. A gear mechanism for achieving this (see Division F2), is described. |
