The unit (1) has a group of filaments or wires (2), which is arranged at a solar collector. The filaments or wires control impinging of a hailstone on the collector or on a sensitive part of the collector against hailstorm, where diameter of the hailstone exceeds a specific critical value. The filaments or wires run parallel to each other and stay under a nominal tensile stress. Transverse filaments or transverse wires run transverse to the filaments or wires, and form a grid or mesh with the former filaments or wires. The wires consist of stainless steel, and the filaments consist of plastic.
