The invention relates to a method for evaluating and improving the technical performance of a complex industrial business, in particular a water service, according to which: all of the technical fields related to the business are divided into a plurality of functional categories; for each category, a mapping of the occupations implemented in said category (1.1, 4.9) is defined; the skill level of each occupation is evaluated through comparison with a skill level considered to be optimal; said evaluation is weighted by a degree of criticality expressing the greater or lesser importance of the occupation in question; the different weighted evaluations are grouped, for all occupations of all categories, to perform an overall evaluation; and action is taken to improve the least skilled occupations, particularly by reforming or replacing techniques deemed inadequate and/or by transferring know-how so as to increase the overall technical performance of the industrial business.
