PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device which is equipped with light control function capable of lighting without congruity feeling, and prevented from going-out and flickering of HID. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device is equipped with a power source, a power converter for converting a power supply voltage, a start-up circuit for starting up the discharge lamp, a power control section for controlling output power, and a light control section for controlling luminous flux of the discharge lamp. The power control section includes a transient power control means for outputting rating time-start-up power, and outputting rating time-transition power which is continuously increased to rating time-stable power, a stably lighting means for retaining the rating time-stable power, and a light control means for reducing stably lighting time-output power to light control time-stable power when a light-control signal is received. Moreover, the power control section includes a light control time-transient power control means for outputting light control time-start-up power not larger than the rating time-start-up power, and outputting light control time-transition power which is continuously increased to the rating time-stable power, and a light control time-stably lighting means for retaining the light control time-stable power.
