A method of identifying a region of interest in a medical image captured by a medical imaging device such as a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner is initiated by obtaining and ordering a list of voxels of the image according to a variable, such as intensity or gradient magnitude. A user selection is made to select a candidate voxel whose variable is set as a threshold value. A region of interest is generated by selecting a group of neighbouring voxels from the list with a variable value equal or greater than the threshold. Qualifying voxels may be included in the region if they are determined to neighbour other voxels in the region of interest on the basis of an iterative connected-component (ICC) algorithm. Accordingly, the method allows a region of interest to be grown from a single user-selection, and allows the user to set threshold values to prevent the accidental inclusion of unwanted structures in the region of interest. An apparatus for identifying a region of interest is also disclosed in which a processor performs the steps of the method to allow identification and display the region of interest upon a display device. |
