PURPOSE: A pinyin input method for a portable device is provided to arrange more than 12 pinyin consonants and vowels efficiently in a 4×3 keypad of the portable device. CONSTITUTION: A portable device includes a 4×3 keypad and a display unit. The 4×3 keypad includes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0, *, and # keys. The consonants b, p and m are allocated to the key 1, and the consonant f, d and t are allocated to the key 2. The consonants n, l and r are allocated to the key 3, and the consonants g, k and h are allocated to the key 4. The consonants j, q and x are allocated to the key 5, and the diphtlhongs ch, zh and sh are allocated to the key 6. The consonants z, c and s are allocated to the key 7, and the semi-vowel y and the vowel I are allocated to the key 8. The vowel o is allocated to the key 0, and the vowel e is allocated to the # key. The vowel a is allocated to the * key.
