FIELD: physics; acoustics. ^ SUBSTANCE: invention relates to coding audio signals and subsequent synthesis of sound stages from the coded audio signals. An input audio signal having an input time envelope is converted to an output audio signal having an output time envelope. The input time envelope of the input audio signal is analysed. The input audio signal is processed to generate a processed audio signal, where the input audio signal is decorrelated during processing. The processed audio signal is adjusted based on the analysed input time envelope to generate an output audio signal, where the output time envelope essentially coincides with the input time envelope. ^ EFFECT: provision for sensation of spatial location of a sound source when listening due to use of a suitable set of spatial key information. ^ 32 cl, 24 dwg
