Lubricating compositions based on a refined mineral petroleum oil or a synthetic oil contain (a) 0.1-15 wt. per cent of an extreme pressure additive, and (b) 0.1-25 wt. per cent of a solid or semi-solid polymer of 4-methylpentene-1 having a limiting viscosity number within the range 0.1-1.5 and prepared by polymerizing the monomer in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst at a temperature within the range 20 DEG to -120 DEG C. In the example, the E.P. additive used is one containing sulphur, chlorine, zinc and phosphorus and available under the Trade Name "Anglamol 93." The compositions may also contain a zinc diaryl or dialkyl dithiophosphate.
