The invention relates to a gas turbine engine which is arranged to drive a power output shaft through an aerodynamic torque converter, the casing of the torque converter being connected to receive air tapped from the compressor discharge and to discharge air back to the working fluid circuit of the engine either upstream or downstream of the combustion equipment. The engine shown comprises a compressor 11, air preheater 17, combustion equipment 15 and turbine 12, the turbine being connected to drive the compressor through shaft 13, and the turbine and compressor shaft extension 24 being connected to drive a power output shaft 25 through an aerodynamic torque converter 20. The torque converter comprises a casing 21, an input or pump member 23 secured to the shaft 24 and an output or turbine member 25<SP>1</SP> secured to the output shaft 25. The converter casing is connected to the compressor discharge through line 26 in which are disposed a valve 28, a pump P 2 and a pressure regulator 33. The converter casing is also connected to the engine circuit either upstream (as shown) or downstream of the combustion equipment 15, through line 27 in which are disposed a valve 29 and a pressure regulator 35<SP>1</SP> which is controlled by an element 35 responsive to temperature of the air in the converter casing 21. The casing 21 is also connected to the inlet 32 of the compressor 11 through line 30 in which are disposed a valve 31 and a suction pump P 1 . The line 30 is also connected to an air ejector 36 by way of a line containing a valve 38, the pressure air for the ejector being taken from the line 26. A device 34 responsive to the temperature at the inlet to the turbine is connected to the pressure regulator 33 also to the temperature responsive element 35 to adjust the datum thereof. At starting of the engine, the converter casing would be evacuated so that no torque is transmitted to the shaft 25 - the valves 28 and 29 would be closed and valve 31 opened so that the casing 21 is connected to the compressor inlet 32. The suction pump P 1 may be used to further decrease the pressure in the casing 21, or the ejector device 36 may be used by opening the valve 38. When the engine is to supply shaft power, the valves 28, 29 are opened and valve 31 closed so that air under pressure is supplied to and discharged from the casing 21. The pressure of air supplied to the casing may be increased by means of the pump P 2 in the line 26. At idling, the valves 28, 29 are closed and the valve 31 opened as in the starting phase. A braking effect on the turbine can be achieved by partial closing of the valve 29 which results in increase of pressure of the air in the converter casing; alternatively the pressure may be increased by operating the pump P 2 .
