6-Methyl-4-(2',2',3'-trimethyl-3'-cyclopenten-1'-yl)-2-cyclohexen-1-ol, is new. 6-Methyl-4-(2',2',3'-trimethyl-3'-cyclopenten-1'-yl)-2-cyclohexen-1-ol of formula (I), is new. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) an odoriferous substance or aroma substance composition comprising the compound (I) and at least one further odoriferous substance or aroma substance; (2) a perfumed or aromatized product (p1) comprising the compound or the odoriferous substance or aroma substance; (3) new 6-methyl-4-(2',2',3'-trimethyl-3'-cyclopenten-1'-yl)-2-cyclohexen-1-one of formula (II); (4) preparation of the compound (II) involving reacting alpha -methylenecampholenealdehyde with 2-methylacetoacetic acid ethyl ester in a base-catalyzed cyclization reaction; (5) preparation of the compound (I); and (6) producing, enhancing or modifying a sandalwood odor in a mixture, involving providing the compound (I), providing a composition of other constituents and mixing the composition with the compound (I), to produce a sandalwood odor in the resultant complete mixture, to enhance an existing sandalwood odor in the composition of other constituents or to modify an existing sandalwood odor in the composition of other constituents.
