[Also in Division G2] An instrument display panel on which readout information is invisible until back-lit, comprises an element 31 transmitting 5-30% of light having wavelengths of from 500-640 millimicrons, and 5-35% of light wavelengths of from 640-700 millimicrons, an opaque preferably black coat 33 with openings 34 on one side of the element, and a light diffusing colour filtering coat 40. The coat 40 consists of clear differently coloured coats 35 on which is superposed a colourless diffusing coating 37 transmitting at least 90% of white light and green, yellow orange, and red light. The opposite face of element 31 has another diffusing coating 38, both coatings 37 and 38 having an abrasion resistance at least 25% greater than that of the element 31. The element 31 may be of acrylate resin, say “ inch thick, the coatings being sprayed on in liquid form and dried to give films from 0À5 to 5 mils thick. The face receiving coat 38 may previously be inscribed with words which are visible at all times The complete panel is mounted in a box system in front of lamps 9, one for each opening 34. Openings 34 become visible as coloured indicia against a black, matte ground when lamps 9 are energized. |
