[Also in Division E1] A corner protector 16 for a pack 10 of bricks 20 with holes 18 for the tines of a fork-lift truck, comprises a polypropylene &c. strip 38 which is molecularly oriented. The raw polypropylene sheet from which the strip 38 is cut, is first stretched and rolled to give a largely longitudinal orientation 60 and therefore high tensile strength and creep resistance in that direction, while allowing the strip 38 to be folded into an L-section, it then undergoes a searing operation to produce a skin 64 with random grain orientation and therefore high abrasion resistance. The strip 38 is applied to the pack 10 under tension being first folded into a flattened U-section, Fig. 5 (not shown), from which it springs back to the L-section of the protector 16, and is held in tension by the steel bonds, 14. The tensioned protectors 16, hold the pack 10 together during transport, Apparatus for applying the protector 16. Fig. 4, comprises a dispenser 36 whence the strip 38 is passed through a pair of drag rollers 40, then a die 44 where it is folded into a flattened U-section, and then past spring fingers 50 to form the protector 16. The strip 38 is anchored to the packs 10 by steel tape 55 fed from a dispenser 54 through a shoot 52 round the bricks whence a strapping machine 56 applies a seal 58. |
