1,222,387. Solid solutions of perylene 3,4,9,10- tetracarboxylic acid di-imides. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 22 Nov., 1968 [24 Nov., 1967], No. 55496/68. Heading C4P. The invention comprises solid solutions of two or more compounds of the general formula wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are each H or a hydrocarbon radical e.g. alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, or alkaryl; or a heterocyclic radical e.g. pyridyl or benzothiazolyl, or alkoxy or alkoxyaryl any of the above substituents being optionally substituted by halogen, nitro, hydroxy, alkoxy or dialkylamino groups. The components are preferably present in the range 95: 5 to 5: 95. They are prepared by (a) contacting two or more perylene tetracarboxylic acid diimides with an organic liquid having a high dielectric constant at temperatures up to the reflux of the organic liquid e.g. dimethylformamide, pyridine, phenol, trichlorobenzene, dimethylsulphoxide, N- methyl - pyrrolidone and quinoline; (b) "vatting" the mixtures of diimides in aqueous alkaline sodium hydrosulphite and then; precipitating the diimides by adding an oxidizing agent; (c) dissolving the diimide mixture in a solvent e.g. dimethylformamide, chloroform trichlorobenzene, quinoline, water, sulphuric acid or phosphoric acid with heat and pressure if required, or (d) reacting perylene tetracarboxylic acid or its anhydride with ammonia and an amine, or two or more amines, in an aqueous solution at 130-150‹ C. under pressure. The pigments may be used to colour automobile enamels. |
