In a joint between a boss member 15, such as a pump or valve body, and a tubular member 10, such as an elbow or tee-piece, wherein the boss has a bore 16 provided with internal threads 18 and a contact surface 20, and the tubular member has externally threaded parts 27 and 28, which are received by a lock nut 32 and the said internal threads respectively and which are spaced by a smooth cylindrical portion 30 having a diameter substantially the same as or slightly less than the minor diameter of said threaded parts, a resilient gasket 41 such as an "0"-ring, is mounted on said smooth cylindrical portion and provided with an annular gasket retention arrangement consisting of a first portion 36 disposed radially around the gasket and initially spaced therefrom and a second portion 33 disposed around said smooth cylindrical portion axially between the gasket and lock nut such that, on tightening the lock nut, the gasket is deformed into tight sealing engagement with the gasket retention portions, the boss member and said smooth cylindrical portion and the first gasket retention portion is urged against said boss contact surface. As shown, the first gasket retention portion 26 is formed by a metal ring having an axial thickness less than the axial thickness of gasket ring 41 and the second gasket retention portion 33 is formed by a flat metal washer, the said retention portions, said smooth cylindrical fitting portion and a 90 degree chamfer 22 at the end of the threaded boss bore defining a cavity, which is substantially filled by the gasket when compressed, Fig. 3 (not shown). The difference is thickness between the ring and gasket is preferably greater than the pitch of internal threads 18 so that the tubular member may be angularly adjusted to the desired relative angular position by further screwing of the tubular member into the boss member prior to tightening of the lock nut. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the included angle of the boss member chamfer exceeds 90 degrees and intersects the contact surface radially outwards of the inside diameter of the gasket retention ring 36. In further modifications, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), respectively, the first gasket retention portion is integral with the look nut or with second gasket retention portion. |
