A copolymer of maleic anhydride and an alkene, i.e <FORM:0981970/C3/1> where R is a C2- 6 straight-chain alkyl, may be prepared by copolymerizing the monomers, alone or with at least one other mono-ethylenically unsaturated compound, in bulk or in an inert organic solvent and in the presence of a free radical catalyst, separating the copolymer and drying it. The alkene may preferably be 2-methyl butene-1 or 2-methyl pentene-1, and the copolymer may contain at least 25% molar of each monomer. The other unsaturated compound may be an acrylic ester, methyl methacrylate, diethyl fumarate, di-n-butyl maleate, N-phenyl maleimide, or an alkene, i.e. <FORM:0981970/C3/2> where R1 and R2 are alkyl and which has a chain of not more than 6 C, e.g. isobutene, a large number of other unsaturated compounds are listed. The copolymers may be of specified reduced viscosities and may be in the form of a sheet of specified dimensions. The polymerization catalyst may be an organic peroxide, perester or azo compound. The copolymer may be washed with a specified solvent after separation from the polymerization liquor. The polymerization solvent may also act as a chain transfer agent in the case of a chlorinated alkane, diethyl ether or toluene. The copolymer may be formed into pellets or shaped in the thermoplastic state into specified articles. |
