In a process of surface treating films of synthetic plastics material with an electric discharge to improve their adhesion to coatings, a halogen, halogen-containing gas mixture and/or one or more halogen compounds in the form of gas, dust or droplets is supplied to the discharge zone. In examples, films of polyethylene, polypropylene and regenerated cellulose are treated by electric discharge in presence of chlorine and then coated with an aqueous dispersion of vinylidene chloride/acrylonitrile/acrylic ester copolymer, an acetone solution of vinylidene chloride/vinyl chloride copolymer, or a solution of vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/maleic acid copolymer. |
