PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the capacitance of a capacitor for ensuring a time for allowing instantaneous power interruption of a switching power supply. SOLUTION: A switching power supply is equipped with a capacitor; first and second switch elements for switching the DC voltage across the capacitor; a transformer with a terminal tap for a primary winding connected to the first switch element and an intermediate tap for a primary winding connected to the second switch element; a rectifier circuit connected to the secondary winding of the transformer; and a smoothing circuit connected to the rectifier circuit. The switching power supply includes and a control circuit which selectively operates either of the first and second switch elements according to the value of the DC voltage.
