<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for decoding image data reproduced from a recording medium by the use of a decoder that is the same as a decoder for broadcast image data. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A reproduction apparatus for video and audio data stores image data read out from a recording medium 1 into a memory means 6. A memory controller circuit 7 implements control for reading out a part (a back header) of the image data. A back-header analyzer circuit 9 extracts reproduction clock information and bit rate information included in the part which is thus read out. A comparator 10 compares the reproduction clock information with a reference clock signal generated by a reference clock-signal generator 11 and provides the comparison result to the memory controller circuit 7. Based on the comparison result and the bit rate information, the memory controller circuit 7 controls data readout from the memory 6.
