The spiral stepped spring coupling has a main coupling spring (38) wrapped around coaxial input gear and output shaft (10, 30). One end of the spring is secured to the output shaft, and the other end of the spring is secured to a freely rotatable ring (58) in a bearing surrounding the input member. The coupling is disengaged by stopping the rotation of the ring. As long as the output member continues to rotate this causes the spring to become unwrapped from the output shaft and to become pressed against the interior surface of a fixed sleeve (68) surrounding the spring, arresting the output shaft.
