In an hydraulic tappet assembly comprising an inner plunger 20 slidably mounted in an outer cylinder 10, a spring 48 biasing the plunger 20 and cylinder 10 apart, a low pressure fluid chamber 28 to which fluid is fed through apertures 38, 34, a fluid chamber 32 defined between the plunger 20 and cylinder 12, and a spring- pressed ball valve 42 adapted to co-operate with apertures 30, 50 in the plunger 20 and a spring retainer 46 respectively, the ball valve 42 has a predetermined mass such that below a predetermined frequency of oscillation of the cylinder 10 it moves between flow blocking and unblocking positions in response to the fluid pressure differential between the chambers 28, 32, and above the predetermined frequency of oscillation the ball valve 42 reciprocates so that it alternately blocks apertures 30, 50 in response to acceleration of the cylinder 12 and in response to the inertia of the ball valve 42. In a modification, an inverted cup-shaped plunger 201, Fig. 1a houses a spring 90, and a source of low pressure fluid is supplied to a port 78 through an annular channel 76. In another modification, a shuttle valve 51, Fig. 2, consisting of a pair of conically shaped valve members 52, 54 is employed. Fig. 2a shows an arrangement similar to that shown in Fig. 1a but employing a shuttle valve 511. In a further modification, two ball valves 61, 62, Fig. 3, are employed, the balls being of different sizes. Fig. 3a shows an arrangement similar to those shown in Figs. la and 2a but employing two ball valves 611, 621.
