An organic EL element having an extended luminance half life. A method for manufacturing an organic electroluminescent element comprising a first electrode formed early, a second electrode formed later, and a light-emitting layer formed between the first electrode and the second electrode.  The method comprises: a step wherein a coating film is formed by applying a solution containing a light-emitting organic material to the surface of a layer positioned below; a step wherein a light-emitting layer is formed by firing the coating film in an inert gas atmosphere or a vacuum atmosphere; a step wherein the surroundings of the thus-formed light-emitting layer is maintained in an inert gas atmosphere or a vacuum atmosphere; and a step wherein a layer positioned above the light-emitting layer is formed in an inert gas atmosphere or a vacuum atmosphere.
