The arrangement (10) has a sensor unit (12) provided with an ultrasonic generator device (14) and an ultrasound receiver device (16) and arranged in a proximity of a surface (20a) of a material layer (20). A coupling layer (18) couples the surface of the material layer with the sensor unit, where the coupling layer is formed from material damping ultrasonic waves, and the material layer is made of aluminum or an aluminum alloy. A signal processor device (24) determines thickness of an ice layer (22), and processes signals of the ultrasound receiver device. An independent claim is also included for a method for detection of an ice layer on a surface of a material layer.
