PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a free-cutting alloy tool steel capable of suppressing both of the material deformation due to heat treatment at quenching and the material deformation due to machining and obtaining the hardness necessary as a cold mold or a machine structural component. SOLUTION: The free-cutting alloy tool steel has a composition containing, by mass, 0.50 to 0.90% C, 0.50 to 2.20% Si,≥0.8% Mn, 0.10 to 0.23 Mn/Cr, 1.35 to 2.05% (Mn+0.08Cr), 0.01 to 0.30% Ni, 0.01 to 0.50% (Mo+0.5W),≤0.55 (Mo+0.5W)/Mn, 0.01 to 0.15% V, 0.03 to 0.15% S, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities.
