A filter press comprises frames 1 supporting on each side of inflatable diaphagms 3 which support filter cloths 4 on spacing means 5. Slurry is introduced into the spaces between facing cloths 4 by channels 7, 8, and filtrate passing through the cloths runs along spacing means 5 to discharge at the peripheries or into special channels (24, 25) (Fig. 2, not shown). The cake is then compressed to extract residual liquid by inflating diaphragms 3 through channels 11. The cake may fall out when the press is opened and the diaphragms resiliently flatten out, or reverse flow air may be delivered to filtrate outlet channels to inflate the cloths (Fig. 6. not shown) and aid removal. In Fig. 7 an endless metal or synthetic mesh band 36 extends between adjacent frames and the filter cake fills its interstices. When the press is opened flat plates 38, 43 supporting band 36 are rotated (Fig. 8, not shown), splitting the filter cake in half. The cake may be adhered to band 36 in successive filtering and pressing stages, the press being opened only after several such cycles when sufficient cake has built up. Diaphragms 3 may be reinforced by fabric Where they are peripherally bonded to frames 1. The diaphragms, spacers 5 and clothes 4 may be bonded together uniformly or peripherally. Slurry may enter channels 7 at the ends of the press or by separate top inlets (30) (Figs. 3, 4, not shown). The frames may be rectangular or circular.</p> |
