<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cathode for a discharge lamp enabling to achieve a discharge lamp which emits long-time stable light without causing the flickering of the emitted light at an early stage, and to provide the discharge lamp equipped therewith. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The cathode 10 for the discharge lamp contains an emitter material, wherein a carbide layer is formed on an outer surface of the cathode, the carbide layer is formed on an area continuous to a tip portion 10A of the cathode 10, and two or more grooves D extending toward the tip portion of the cathode 10 are formed on the area where the carbide layer is formed.
