PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus for efficiently initializing a band memory for storing drawing data formed from intermediate language data, and to provide a method for controlling image formation, a program for controlling image formation, and a recording medium. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus 1, a drawing part 7 generates band data on every page from the intermediate language data received from a computer PC and converted by a CPU 2. The image forming apparatus 1 accesses a band memory region 5c by a specified access algorithm to store the band data. When the band memory region 5c is initialized on every page, in order to store the band data, the image forming apparatus 1 appropriately selectively accesses an data access algorithm when accessing the band memory region 5c, or an initializing access algorithm when accessing the band memory region 5c to initialize the band memory region 5c, depending on at the time of data accessing or initialization.
