Novel 2 - (4<SP>1 </SP>- chloronaphthyl - (1<SP>1</SP>) - methyl)- imidazoline having the formula and its acid addition and quaternary ammonium salts is prepared by (a) Reacting 4 - chloro - naphthyl - (1) - acetonitrile with ethylene diamine or a salt thereof. (b) Reacting 4 - chloro - naphthyl - ( 1 ) - acetonitrile with an ethylene dihalide and ammonia or with a 1 -amino-2-haloethane or a salt thereof or with monoethanolamine or a salt thereof. (c) Reacting 4 - chloronaphthyl - (1) - acetamide or 4 - chloronaphthyl - (1) - thioacetamide with a 1-amino-2-haloethane or a salt thereof. (d) Reacting 4-chloronaphthyl-(1)-acetic acid with ethylene diamine or a salt thereof. (e) Reacting 4 - chloronaphthyl - (1) - acetimino-ethylether or a salt thereof with ethylene diamine or a salt thereof. (f) Reacting 1 - (4<SP>1</SP> - chloronaphthyl - 1<SP>1</SP>) - 2- ethoxyacetylene with ethylene diamine or a salt thereof. (g) Cyclizing mono - (4 - chloronaphthyl - 1)- acetylethylene diamine. 4-Chloronaphthyl- (1) -acetonitrile is prepared by heating under reflux a mixture of 4-chloro-1- chloromethyl-naphthalene, potassium cyanide, potassium iodide, ethanol and water. A pharmaceutical composition containing 2- (4<SP>1</SP>-chloronaphthyl-(1<SP>1</SP>)-methyl)-imidazoline or an acid addition or quaternary ammonium salt in association with a pharmaceutical carrier has vasoconstrictive activity.</p> |
