<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine effectively reducing the number of PM particles and oil dilution during cold operation. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An ECU 51 suppresses and controls the number of PM particles during cold operation to restrain fuel injection timing when water temperature is not higher than a threshold value. The suppression and control of the number of PM particles determines the advance limit injection timing T1 on the basis of water temperature and difference between water temperature and oil temperature, and calculates the delay limit injection timing T1 (first delay limit injection timing) on the basis of water temperature at startup, and the delay limit injection timing T2 (second delay limit injection timing) on the basis of oil temperature.
