A stable urania sol is prepared by precipitating hydrous urania from an aqueous uranou nitrate solution by adding an alkaline reagent, to a final pH of 6À0-7À3, separating, washing and heating the precipitated hydrous urania at 60-80‹ C., all under a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The uranous (tetravalent uranium) solution may be supplied as an organic salt such as uranous formate or by reduction of hexavalent uranium in solution, such as uranyl nitrate solution obtained in solvent extraction reprocessing of spent nuclear reactor fuels, by hydrogen with a platinum catalyst, such as 0.001 molar chloroplatinic acid, and in the presence of a nitrite-inhibiting agent such as 0À25-0À3 molar urea. The solution should have about 0.5 molar tetravalent uranium concentration and a nitrate to uranium ratio of 4 to 1. The alkaline reagent may be any strong base, especially ammonium hydroxide, and the atmosphere may be an inert gas. The sols may be used alone or mixed with other actinide sols to prepare nuclear reactor fuels.</p>
