Also in Division G1] Surface defects are detected photo-electrically using a fibre optic light guide arrangement for scanning. In the investigation for example, of the surface of a roller, for axially aligned defects, the light guide arrangement comprises at least two bundles of fibres held together by a rigid tube 1. The guide 3 transmits light from source 2 on to the surface and that 5 transmits light reflected from the surface to a photo-cell. The arrangement is moved axially of the roller which is rotating. The ends of the fibres of bundle 5 are formed into a line 5a parallel to the roller axis. If defects at right angles to the roller axis are to be detected, a further bundle whose ends are formed into a line 5b is provided. |
