The motor (110) has a digital control unit (50) i.e. microcontroller, with a multivalent connection (52) to be usable as a digital control output (52') or as an analog measuring input (52''). The digital control output outputs digital control signals (CTRL) for controlling a controllable semiconductor switch (42) utilized to control the current in a coil strand (32) of a stator (30). The analog measuring input detects an analog signal. The multivalent connection is switched from the function of the control output to the function of the measuring input based on the amplitude of the signals. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling an electronically commutated electric motor.
