1162549 Super-conductors IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 17 Nov 1967 [2 Dec 1966] 54134/66 Headings H1A A5 and A4D A composite conductor comprises a ductile super-conductor material in thermal and electrical contact with a first non-super-conductor material of high thermal and electrical conductivity and mechanically connected to a second non-superconductor material of better mechanical strength than the first non-super-conductor material. Various relative arrangements of the three materials are described, the conductors being produced by assembling the components within one another and extruding or drawing the assembly followed by annealing. In one embodiment superconductor wires coated with copper are soldered into grooves rolled into the surface of a strip of copper containing steel filaments. The super-conductor material may be niobium 44 wt. per cent Ti, the highly conductive material may be Cu or Al and the strong material may be stainless steel (Fe 18 wt. per cent Ni 8 wt. per cent Cr), Cu 0À1 wt. per cent Zr, Cu 3 wt. per cnt Be, Ti 15 wt. per cent Mo, or Ti 3 wt. per cent Cu. The solder may be Sn, In or Sn-Pb.
