The exhaust gas purification catalyst contains at least a precious metal that is coated with a lanthanum-containing alumina. Thus it is possible to provide an exhaust gas purification catalyst with both improved heat resistance and limited solid solution of the precious metal into the alumina by the precious metal being coated with the alumina, and to provide a method for efficiently purifying an exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine using said catalyst.
