<PICT:1082107/C1/1> A process for the production of flat or curved glass sheets of predetermined dimensions and shape, with fire-polished surfaces and rounded edges and of a thickness of 2 to 6 mm. comprises casting liquid glass 1 in a mould 2 closed by a correspondingly-shaped plate 5 which exerts a substantially uniform pressure over the upper surface of the glass layer, the mould and the plate being formed of a material which is not wetted by liquid glass, e.g. graphite, and solidifying the layer of glass by rapidly cooling the surfaces substantially symmetrically and uniformly. The moulding and cooling operations preferably take place in separate compartments of a chamber in an atmosphere of non-oxidized gas, e.g. nitrogen. The rapid cooling of the glass layer is carried out by directing jets of a non-oxidizing gas such as nitrogen from a series of tubes 8, 9, 11, 12 against the outer faces of the plate 5 and mould 2. The rate of cooling of the two faces of the layer can be equalized to avoid deformation of the finished glass sheet.
|
