摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization-independent type optical isolator at a low cost, which can suppress a temperature rise of a Faraday rotator even if the light of a high output is made incident on the Faraday rotator, and can prevent deterioration in isolation. SOLUTION: The polarization-independent type optical isolator has a Faraday rotor that includes a pair of wedge-type birefringence crystal plates 1 and 5 and a magnetic garnet single-crystal 3 arranged between these wedge-type birefringence crystal plates, the Faraday rotor having sapphire single-crystal plates 2 and 4 jointed to the corresponding light transmissive surfaces thereof. The light transmissive surface of each sapphire single-crystal plate is formed so as to be parallel to the non-inclining light transmissive surface of the wedge-type birefringence crystal plate adjacent to it and offset from the corresponding C plane of the sapphire single crystal plate. In addition, a line bisecting an angle formed by normal light and abnormal light separated by the wedge-type birefringence crystal plate on the incident side is vertical to the C planes of the sapphire single crystal plate.
