<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem that the replacement of a paper and a ribbon being consumables is inconvenient in such a printer and tension with respect to the ink ribbon is greatly changed due to the diameter of the ribbon, when the tension is applied to the ink ribbon by a clutch, because the diameter of the ink ribbon is greatly changed at the start of use and at the end of the ribbon. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In a heat-transfer thermal printer, a recording paper holding section and an ink ribbon holding section are provided to be turnable from a printer body. The printer body side includes a drive section for vertically moving a thermal head, a drive section for taking up the ink ribbon and a clutch means for applying back tension to the ink ribbon.
