PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To access a storage means such as an SDRAM at high speed and to form a color image at high speed by devising control for writing and reading of image formation provided for color image formation. SOLUTION: The color image forming apparatus includes: a line memory section 31 for inter-drum delay, in which an amount of delay is set for each image forming unit and image data is stored; and a control section 15 which writes the image data of only a main scanning effective image area into a line memory section 31 and reads the image data from the line memory section 31 to an LED head 32 etc, and which performs a refresh process for the line memory section 31 during the period when the image data is not read or written. This makes it possible to increase (improve) an access speed between the line memory section 31 such as the SDRAM, and the control section 15, compared to the case where the refresh process is inserted during the period when the image data is alternately read and written.
