PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suitably prevent, by a simple configuration, occurrence of an abnormal image such as image flow, in the subsequent image formation after the image forming apparatus is left in a high humidity environment with its power source off. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus including a charger 2 for charging an image carrier 1 by corona discharge, and a polishing means 8a for polishing a surface of the image carrier includes: an environmental condition holding means 11 for holding an environmental condition near the image carrier when the power source of the image forming apparatus is off; a detecting means 21 for detecting the environmental condition held, by the environmental condition holding means, when the power source of the image forming apparatus is turned on; and a control means 30 for controlling, based on a result detected by the detecting means, a polishing condition for polishing the surface of the image carrier.
