PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve an image forming apparatus which excels in image forming capability. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus G, trouble concerning pitch spot is reduced by suppressing variation of rotational speed of a backup roller 43 and a transfer belt 40 or the like during secondary transfer by switching so that pressing force of a secondary transfer roller 44 may be low when an image is formed in a monochrome mode in which tension of the transfer belt 40 is comparatively low and also paper P on which an image is formed is cardboard having larger thickness than a prescribed one.
