PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently detect the gentle unevenness or extremely fine unevenness and irregularity and delicate contrast on the surface of a roller for an electrophotographic apparatus. SOLUTION: This surface inspecting method of the roller 1 for the electrophotographic apparatus has the first step of illuminating the surface for the electrophotographic apparatus and imaging this surface in a state that the roller 1 is rotated around its axis by a line sensor 11 wherein a plurality of pixels 4 are arranged along the axial direction of the roller 1, a second step of performing addition processing, which obtains an addition image data signal in one pixel 4 of the line sensor 11 by adding the respective image data signals, which are respectively outputted from the respective pixels in a predetermined region comprising a plurality of the pixels 4 continuing to one pixel 4 of the line sensor 11, to the color data signal outputted from one pixel 4, at every pixel to perform image processing, and the third step of determining the surface state of the roller 1 on the basis of an image processing signal.
