PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device capable of detecting a face and focusing on the face even in low luminance. SOLUTION: The image pickup device comprises: an imaging optical system including a focusing optical system; an image pickup means; a monitor; a strobe means; a control means for controlling monitor mode photographing in which images photographed by the image pickup means at constant time intervals are displayed on the monitor; a focusing means having a focus search function of detecting a focusing state based on the photographed images; and a face detection means for detecting a face image of a character from the image photographed in the monitor mode. When the face detection means detects a face image, the control means sets the area including the face image as a focus area. When the face detection means does not detect a face image, the control means moves the focusing optical system to the distance for photographing a part above the bust, causes the strobe means to produce luminescence with a preluminescence amount to give correct exposure, causes the image pickup means to photograph an image, causes the face detection means to detect the face image of the character from the photographed image, and causes the focus detection means to set the area including the detected face image as a focus area and perform focus search.
